The Maloof Money Cup’s fifth event out in New York’s Flushing Meadows delivered one hell of an entertaining afternoon yesterday. The day kicked off with the am contest where Orlando, Florida’s Evan Smith casually and systematically destroyed the course with casual flair and deep skills. His nose manual to firecracker down the Brooklyn Banks 9-stair was one of the most unique tricks of the entire contest for the weekend. Evan rightfully earned the win and took home $1,500 along with a one-year supply of Vitaminwater and a flight across the pond to the open qualifiers for the Maloof Money Cup in South Africa. Congrats Evan. Straight up, you killed it!

Soon afterwards, the Pro Finals brought together a dozen top skaters in a rarely seen head-to-head elimination format that focused the crowd, live TV and webcast viewers on the two skaters in each heat where two skaters battled it out for 4-minutes under overcast and favorable skies. After just making the cut in Saturday’s semi-finals, crowd favorite Dennis Busenitz squeezed into the last 12th place spot amongst the finalists. His his stamina and quick skills and unmatched use of the entire skate plaza through three successive finals match ups moved him up the chain to ultimately compete for skateboarding’s highest prize of $160,000.

In the end, Busenitz couldn’t suppress Greg Lutzka who landed trick after trick and including his gnarly “go to” weapon – a frontside 270 to noseblunt down the 9-stair rail. “This was the best contest. The head to head format was great; better than having five guys going at once,” said Lutzka. “The crowd was so into it; it’s easier for them to follow it and it’s more exciting for them to watch. When you’re skating head to head with someone else, you vibe off them. You never know who you’re going to get paired with. It’s like a game of Mortal Combat.” Congrats Lutzka!
